Sessions at the school have included digging out compost from the school compost heaps and filling bags to plant potatoes and making new Christmas cacti plants by separating the leaves.
Making a mixture of everything allowing for creative play which is important for child development.
The Pilot scheme at Junior school has come to an end. The last session was spent planting honeysuckle plants outside the Head teacher’s office and planting up containers with bugle and herbs which will be low maintenance and attract bees.
The project has been very successful. Through gardening tasks, the children have developed their fine and gross motor skills, developed communication skills and team working, shown initiative, been creative, stayed on task – increasing their attention span and increased their self-esteem and interest in gardening.
